In 2022, the joyous legacy of Saturday-morning cartoons is still alive and flourishing. The technology of animation is improving all the time, even if it might occasionally fall into an uncanny valley area. But, more often than not, animated films provide us with the one-of-a-kind gift of quirky depictions of our greatest fantasies. Considering the current state of the world, we may desire more than ever wacky, hilarious, and beautiful cartoons.  

Fortunately, the animation business is perfectly positioned to prosper in these remote-working times, and we may expect to see an increase in animated movies (for all ages!) in the future years. From the upcoming Space Jam film to Bob’s Burgers: The Movie and everything in between, these are the 5 most anticipated animated movie releases for 2022 

 

Here are the forthcoming animated films, ranging from studio efforts to personal indies. 

 

  1. The DC League of Super-Pets  

A new animated film that concentrates on the pets of the heroes and villains. Krypto, Superman’s dog, joins a crime-fighting band of superpowered dogs to defend the Justice League. 

Jared Stern was approached in July 2018 to write and direct a DC Super Pets animated feature. Sam Levine will co-direct with Stern, and Patricia Hicks will act as producer, it was announced in January 2019.  

In May 2021, Dwayne Johnson was announced as Krypto the Superdog’s voice, with many A-list actors in discussions to join him. Along with acting in the picture, he will serve as producer alongside Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Stern, with John Requa, Glen Ficarra, and Nicholas Stoller serving as executive producers.  

The rest of the cast was confirmed in June 2021, with Hart reprising his role as Ace the Bat-Hound in the film. 

 

  2.Turning Red  

Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios are collaborating on a computer-animated magical comedic movie that will be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. 

Domee Shi directed the film, which was written by Shi and Julia Cho and produced by Lindsey Collins. The movie features the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Hyein Park, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, and James Hong. It is the first Pixar picture directed entirely by a woman. 

The film is set in Toronto between 2002 and 2003 and revolves around Meilin “Mei” Lee, a self-assured thirteen-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl caught between becoming her mother’s obedient daughter and the turmoil of adolescence. And, as if changes to her hobbies, relationships, and physique weren’t enough, if she becomes very aroused or upset, she “poofs” into a big red panda owing to her ancestors’ mysterious affinity with red pandas. 

Turning Red will be released in theatres in the United States on March 11, 2022.

 

   3. Lightyear (2022) 

Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures have collaborated on this next animated sci fi action movie, which will be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. 

It is a prequel to Pixar’s Toy Tale movie series, presenting the story of creation for the fictional human character Buzz Lightyear, the inspiration for the action figure of the same title. It is directed by Angus MacLane and stars Chris Evans’ voice as the eponymous character, as well as Taika Waititi. 

When the project was revealed in December 2020, Chris Evans was introduced as the human Buzz Lightyear. MacLane’s first and only option for Buzz was Evans. He paid a visit to Pixar’s studios one day, and they pitched him the concept. Evans accepted the offer right away, owing to his passion for animation. 

 

   4. Disenchanted 

Disenchanted is an upcoming American animated musical fantasy romantic comedy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed and co-written by Adam Shankman.  

Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, and Oscar Nunez join Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel, who all reprise their roles from the previous film, with Gabriella Baldacchino replacing Rachel Covey. 

Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz reprise their roles as the film’s songwriters, with Menken creating the music once more. Along with Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld, Adams is also a producer on the picture. Disenchanted will be released in the United States as a Disney+ exclusive feature in late 2022. 

Giselle, Robert, and Morgan relocate to a new house in the Monroeville suburbs fifteen years after her happily ever after. Malvina Monroe, the community’s administrator, has evil plans for the family. When difficulties come, Giselle wishes their life were a flawless fairytale. The spell backfires, forcing Giselle to flee before the clock hits midnight in order to save her family and the Kingdom of Andalasia.

 

   5. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) 

 

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is an American Animated superhero movie produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, starring Miles Morales / Spider-Man from Marvel Comics, Sony Pictures distributed the film in partnership with Marvel Entertainment. 

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the first of a two-part sequel (2018). 

Morales is voiced by Shameik Moore, who co-stars with Hailee Steinfeld and Oscar Isaac. Weeks before the release of Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, Sony started producing Across the Spider-Verse, with the directing and writing teams involved. It was supposed to center on Morales and Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman.  

The movie was officially announced in November 2019, with animation work set to begin in June 2020 and the title and concepts for a two-part storyline to be revealed in December 2021. 

After being delayed from April 2022 scheduled release because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will be released on October 7, 2022 in the United States. Part Two is scheduled for release in 2023, and a female-focused spin-off picture is also in the works.
